Start with the lease

If you are leased on, the agent will want to know exactly what the lease requires: non-trucking liability with the carrier as additional insured, physical damage with certain deductibles, occupational accident from an approved plan and so on. Having the lease available speeds up the quote and avoids buying something the carrier will not accept.

Compare with the carrier's program

Many carriers offer insurance programs to leased-on drivers and deduct the premium from settlements. Those programs can be convenient. Ask for the coverage details in writing and compare them with quotes you get on your own, looking at limits, deductibles and what happens if you leave the carrier.

If you are planning to go independent

Say so on the form. Quotes for a new authority take longer, and you will want time to compare options before your lease ends. The agent may also explain which filings must be made and when.

Certificates and additional insureds

Once coverage is bound, your carrier will usually ask for a certificate of insurance showing it as certificate holder or additional insured. Ask the agent to send it directly to the carrier's safety or compliance department, and keep a copy in your cab file.
